    I’m just not interested in performative measures.

    Because at least half of the people walking around in circles today voted for Trump and are ‘protesting’ to make themselves feel better.

    Holla at me when they start pulling people out of ICE detention centers and making it clear that’s not gonna fly.

      @are0h

      In NYC we has about 100k people. But that's less than 2 percent of the city.

      So, there is no need to imagine that sad people who voted for Trump came to "feel better" ... though such people may exist in NYC and in other places too.

        I will agree with this. But I think it's fine that liberals had a big loud protest too?

          @futurebird Again, I’m not talking about population size. I’m talking about voting percentages.

          Why? Because you want to believe that’s not happening? That’s not a definitive rebuttal to what I said. You’re just speculating what you want to believe based on the context.

          You’re free to hope for whatever you want, but the data around how people vote has been consistent for a long time.

            I don't really have any "hopes" here. I just thought your initial statement was unlikely because a protest isn't a general sample of the population, it's self-selected.

            Frankly I WISH you were correct that there were people feeling bad and changing their minds. I suspect that isn't happening much at all.

              @futurebird Unlikely why? Because you want to believe bigots don’t travel? And I didn’t say it was a general sampling of the population, but it is a sample of people who care about the results of an election. And voting data says what it says on that.

              I didn’t say I think people would change their minds. I said people use these moments to absolve themselves of bad choices.

              We saw the same thing after Trump got elected the first time and those same white folks voted for Trump again.

              The context is clear in what people support no matter what they profess in the US

                I don't think people who supported Trump would go to an event like that because it would mean admitting at some level they were wrong? It just doesn't track.

                But this is part of the purpose of a mass protest to make people feel less isolated and show those who don't agree they might be outnumbered.

                It was not a radical event, it won't fix everything, and mutual aid and working to stop ICE directly matters more. But it's a kind of win so take it. Push whatever mandates it indicates.
