    @futurebird If not for Slash, November Rain could be a Glen Campbell song. 🙂

        @mfennvt No just complaining about how their dad “listens to country music”

        @futurebird @mfennvt so basically code for "oldies", but I think that's an established genre so they have to keep coming up for new names for "music from 20+ years ago" and maybe they aren't sticking, so the youth is coming up with their own names.

          @futurebird it kinda makes sense that kids would think that, as the current musical landscape doesn't really have traditional blue collar guitar-driven rock-- that space has been increasingly occupied by country. They might see all of rock as country sub-genres

            @futurebird
            As a middle aged European-turned-Californian, whose only connection to NYC so far has been a 3 day visit in ... 2012? ... I'm not sure I'm in any way representative...

            But for some reason, and I had never had any reason to bother to look it up, I always assumed that they were Australian.

              @kevingranade @mfennvt

              Not exactly. They know Michael Jackson isn’t “country” or “Led Zeppelin” for that matter and those are “oldies” This is something more convoluted— I think it’s the bandanna.

                        @futurebird @aethernaut I’ll be honest, I kinda lump Rush, Lynyrd Skinnard, and Guns and Roses in a mental bucket that is certainly adjacent to country.

                            they are from LA!

                            but the kid was like “yeah out west”

                            The theory is if there is a guitar and it’s “from out west” then it’s “country”

                            NYC children concern me sometimes.

                                @futurebird But… Look—I'm from Texas and love to use that as a basis to joke about the rest of the country being less important—but… like 90% of the US is west of NYC? Is midwest Emo also country?? Is a punk band from Jersey also country???

                                Wild.

                                      I’m actually curious: did they just mean “white people music”? or maybe more specifically what they think of as “poor white people music”?

                                        But Black folks love GNR. Always.

                                        But also I don't think it's that simple? Or rather I think it's more simple, they saw bandanas and heard a ballad and thought "this is country"
