@blotosmetek @hypostase @ArchiteuthisFlux Why let the truth get in the way of a good story though πŸ˜‰

But I do love the Spanish version of the story
    https://youtu.be/KvRYd8U7qGY

Beginning to think like this has become a standard filmmakers coursework exercise given that I've now seen 3 different versions that made it all the way to being filmed with actors, crew, etc

@_thegeoff @ArchiteuthisFlux @snail Well what is true is that a US Navy aircraft carrier emerged from the fog in the middle of the 1995 America's Cup racecourse near San Diego. IMO, all excuses the captain brought forward should have cost him his ticket.

        @ArchiteuthisFlux
"Canadian coastguard, this is the US Navy, we are on a collision course. Adjust your bearing 10 degrees south."

        "Nope."

"We say again, collision course, change your bearing."

        "Nope."

"Canadian coastguard, we are an aircraft carrier with a support fleet of two destroyers, three cruisers, a small flotilla of support craft and a classified number of submarines. If you do not change your bearing we will take appropriate action."

        "We're a lighthouse. Your call."

It's probably just because my family's in the fishing industry that I know the secrets of the sea: for instance, boats go on the water and lighthouses go on land, and they should generally not be in the same place at the same time.

omg I'm reading this dumb twitter article but can't continue because I'm laughing too hard at this diagram. Like, using this as a definition of an intelligent system then crashing into the fucking rocks because you don't know wtf a lighthouse is.

@ArchiteuthisFlux the lighthouse knows where it is.

@ArchiteuthisFlux responding to a lighthouse is not a bad metaphor for intelligence though, because it actually involves:

                (a) observationβ€”what is this lighthouse's pattern?
                (b) measurementβ€”what bearing is it...
                (c) self-knowledgeβ€”...relative to my heading?
                (d) external informationβ€”where is it on the chart?
                (e) correlationβ€”conclude where i am along a line
                (f) predictionβ€”where i will be after a period of time
                (g) decision-makingβ€”is that where i want to be?
                (h) actionβ€”course correct as needed.

@ArchiteuthisFlux The fools. They don't even know that boats attempting to crash into a lighthouse don't steer "right" or "left", but rather starboard and port.

@ArchiteuthisFlux maybe it could be argued that a learning system reduces the variance and standards deviation of its corrections, while possibly increasing frequency?

@ArchiteuthisFlux I made the two terrible mistakes of buying the original in 2024, and then being unemployed. I'm sure I'll eventually cave for the shiny new thing though...

(And no I'm not in any serious way saying buying the original was a mistake, god I hate jumper wires for what should be a relatively simple test circuit being thrown together, which is most of my breadboard use)

@ArchiteuthisFlux I guess my rice cooker claims that it's capable of fuzzy logic.

It is a simple expert system that says "how long cooking?" "is it hot?" "ok done"

I'm sure the first thermostats were billed as intelligent automata freeing you from the labor of opening the flue manually.
