It's probably just because my family's in the fishing industry that I know the secrets of the sea: for instance, boats go on the water and lighthouses go on land, and they should generally not be in the same place at the same time.
@ArchiteuthisFlux Could they be delivering groceries to the lighthouse?

@ArchiteuthisFlux [holds up a PID controller] BEHOLD! an intelligent system!

@ArchiteuthisFlux the lighthouse knows where it is.
-
@ArchiteuthisFlux responding to a lighthouse is not a bad metaphor for intelligence though, because it actually involves:
(a) observation—what is this lighthouse's pattern?
(b) measurement—what bearing is it...
(c) self-knowledge—...relative to my heading?
(d) external information—where is it on the chart?
(e) correlation—conclude where i am along a line
(f) prediction—where i will be after a period of time
(g) decision-making—is that where i want to be?
(h) action—course correct as needed. -

@ArchiteuthisFlux The fools. They don't even know that boats attempting to crash into a lighthouse don't steer "right" or "left", but rather starboard and port.

I have no way to make this seem at all relevant but now that this post has broken containment, you should get a Jumperless V5
Jumperless V5
What is it? Jumperless V5 lets you prototype like a nerdy wizard who can see electricity and conjure jumpers with a magic wand. It’s an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for hardware, with an analog-by-nature RP2350B-based dev board, a drawer full of wires, and a workbench full of test equipment (including a pow

@ArchiteuthisFlux I work for a govt agency (sweden) and our director has told us the Big Goals are a lighthouse for everyone to steer towards and I (who wfh) have been yelling NO THAT'S NOT HOW THAT WORKS at my computer screen for a year

@ArchiteuthisFlux [holds up a PID controller] BEHOLD! an intelligent system!
@gardencourt My attempt formally to define humans as featherless biPIDs have been crushed.
-
@ArchiteuthisFlux while this is funny and it made me chuckle I have to ask why you're still validating X by visiting the place?
@rozeboosje 'Cause I like to see a variety of insufferable takes. Thank you for the extremely mastodon one here.

@ArchiteuthisFlux maybe it could be argued that a learning system reduces the variance and standards deviation of its corrections, while possibly increasing frequency?

@ArchiteuthisFlux previous version had moth and a flame.

@ArchiteuthisFlux and the algorithm they think is intelligent works on the same principle as a thermostat.

@ArchiteuthisFlux I made the two terrible mistakes of buying the original in 2024, and then being unemployed. I'm sure I'll eventually cave for the shiny new thing though...
(And no I'm not in any serious way saying buying the original was a mistake, god I hate jumper wires for what should be a relatively simple test circuit being thrown together, which is most of my breadboard use)

@ArchiteuthisFlux I guess my rice cooker claims that it's capable of fuzzy logic.
It is a simple expert system that says "how long cooking?" "is it hot?" "ok done"
I'm sure the first thermostats were billed as intelligent automata freeing you from the labor of opening the flue manually.

@ArchiteuthisFlux I dunno, that diagram looks kinda tacky.

@turmoni Not to tempt you further, but I do have a $150 off discount code for "upgrade pricing."
I have no way to automatically verify you have an OG Jumperless so the process is just DMing me and I'll take your word for it and send you a code.
