    @ArchiteuthisFlux also, that's not how you navigate, at all.

    It looks more like a sailboat tacking, and failing to pay attention to the massive lighthouse in their direction of travel

    @sortius @ArchiteuthisFlux not to be nitpicky but: don't boats steer port/ starboard, not left/right?

          I have no way to make this seem at all relevant but now that this post has broken containment, you should get a Jumperless V5

It’s an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for hardware, with an analog-by-nature RP2350B-based dev board, a drawer full of wires, and a workbench full of test equipment (including a pow

            @sortius @ArchiteuthisFlux I have no nautical training whatsoever. I'm just a landlubber and avid reader who has enjoyed numerous books about adventures on the high seas.

              It's probably just because my family's in the fishing industry that I know the secrets of the sea: for instance, boats go on the water and lighthouses go on land, and they should generally not be in the same place at the same time.

                @ArchiteuthisFlux I guess my rice cooker claims that it's capable of fuzzy logic.

                It is a simple expert system that says "how long cooking?" "is it hot?" "ok done"

                I'm sure the first thermostats were billed as intelligent automata freeing you from the labor of opening the flue manually.

                  @ArchiteuthisFlux

                  So intelligence is just convergent series?

                  If I keep facepalming that hard I'm gonna look like a French bulldog that ran at a relativistic speed into a bulletproof glass door.

                  Hoomans, please stop with the stupidity. We already know Einstein was right, we don't need more data points.

                  Thank you – management.

                  @7heo @ArchiteuthisFlux ok wait what?
                  I can't tell if running at relativistic speed would do anything notable or just be more 'cronch' at the end.

                    @johnnythan @ArchiteuthisFlux They're not, that's the really sad thing. This isn't at all how neural networks in living things find their ways towards goals. You can simulate that *accurately* in about 10 lines of BASIC or FORTRAN. I've done it.

                    This is multi level misunderstanding: of the exercise, of the goal, AND of how to achieve it.

                      @MxVerda @ArchiteuthisFlux oh, the thing that controls how open the chimney is. maybe it's a colloquialism, sorry.

                      to describe the device that I may have the wrong name for, you limit the amount of new air that the stove gets, limiting the burn rate of the fire, which is how you control how hot your stove heated house gets.

                      I've only seen it on wood burning stoves.

                          @MxVerda I just speed-scrolled through all our captains' Facebook just to check if any have a ship cat right now and I don't see any, a bit over half have a dogs though. I've known a few ship cats who basically act like dogs. So yeah, animals that live on boats are always the coolest.

                                    @MxVerda @ArchiteuthisFlux if it's an open fireplace, the flue is a piece of metal fixed into the chimney and you can use a handle above the fireplace to open and close it.

                                    if it is closed, smoke would pour into the house. if it is open your house is venting hot air. fireplaces aren't great.

                                    a stove is fully enclosed and much more efficient, and you can limit the burn rate so that a log or two can go all night and is designed from the ground up to heat the house through the chimney.

                                          @rune @ArchiteuthisFlux you're still not supposed to aim AT the lighthouse. You tack into the wind, but the goal is to be in the channel/deep water near the navigational aid.
