(and this isn't the passive "glue gun" role some portray it as, they respond to taps from their older sisters to make attachment points and weave wall patterns)
Ant larvae might be offended by being mistaken for eggs... which are sometimes emergency food!

Unlike other insect larvae such as caterpillars or nymphs they can't walk or feed themselves, but this is the hymenopteran innovation. Baby bees are similar.
