For whatever reason, Lemmy _always_ checks `audience` even though it doesn't need to.
I brought this up [for discussion in their github](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/5278), and it resulted in [@nutomic@lemmy.ml](https://community.nodebb.org/user/nutomic%40lemmy.ml) [removing parsing of `audience` altogether](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/5315)!
So this might actually be a moot point once more Lemmy instances update, but I am not 100% sure.
