There *is* at least two more layers to it: One the one hand a base competency and trust in one's own base competency in order to not be scared by form fields for "Sonstige Einkünfte die dem Progressionsvorbehalt unterliegen" (sorry non-Germans, best not to translate), and on the other hand the approximate knowledge what this field wants which does involve an approximate knowledge on how taxing works.
