Optimism!

I've been following the NHL for forever and I've understood in some sense that the sabres are where dreams go to die, but I don't think that ever sunk in for me as much as it did last night watching how sad their first-rounder looked after being picked. Maybe I'm a dumbass and it's just how he normally looks but I can't ever remember getting that bad an impression from an NHL pick's facial expressions and body language after being drafted.   On the flip side imagine knowing you're going to be drafted in the NHL first round, the sabres are up and there's a decent chance they take you, and then you dodge that bullet and the very next pick has you getting on a helicopter to fly to disneyland.  

Wow. The game has changed a lot. It's seems so much crisper on the passing now. Also their pads don't look nearly as huge. Hitting was probably bigger back in the day though ...

That was a great series. I really enjoyed the games. There was a lot of room to skate and the fastest players had an opportunity to put on quite a show.

Plus that one year contract has a relatively small (by NHL standards) base salary with bonuses based in games played and overall team performance. It's pretty low risk for the team, and has the potential of increasing ticket and merch sales based on having a hometown hero on the team.

I wonder if after tax purely based on their NHL contract (so without their personal investment or moonlight job) will work.

Careful, you might err the other way and get your hopes up for a cup after the Presidents trophy for best regular season of all time just to watch them bounce out in the first round. May still be a bit salty about Marchand missing the breakaway that year but scoring this series, in a dirty Floridaman jersey no less
