From what I remember from my school days (for some reason, religious education in my school focused A LOT on cults, how to spot them, how to help and how to get out), the average cult member stays for about two years before realising the scam. It's a small minority who will stay longer. The way the cult survives is by constantly looking for new members to replace those who left. And of course, cult leaders know what type of people to target.
