  • I really do not understand "The Line" living in NYC, one of the more dense cities in the world, every day I appreciate the way we've solved the problems created by having so many people in one place.

@futurebird What make a city infastructure feel alive to me is that it is an amalgam of different choices layered over hundreds of years. Thousands of tiny choices: how thick to make a window frame, how tall above street level is the main floor. Buildings built by individuals then repurposed, styles changing over time. Untold layers built up over decades.

A single mind, or even a team of minds, is not able to replicate decades of choices, to capture that humanity. Sterility reigns because it's easier to use standardized forms. Function becomes less important than ease of decision making.

Planned cimmunities like this is always about control. One mind making the choices, either to earn money off the venture or control people. Everything else is window dressing, a sales job.

  • The original Ponzi Scheme created by Carlo Pietro Giovanni Guglielmo Tebaldo Ponzi (what a name!) involved buying international stamps and using a loophole to get free money.

@futurebird I keep thinking about the old wildcat banks in the US. Back when each bank issued their own currency.

    Yeah, that worked well.

It's just a variation on an old American practice. You would give the bank your cold hard cash, and they would give you bank notes. Essentially currency tied to the solvency of the bank. It freed the bank up from having to give you the actual cash in your checking account, more or less. Currency that could be exchanged for dollars at an exchange rate.

Geographic limitations meant the fault of a bank was mostly local.

    Crypto will be world wide.

  • I think we should treat people who get scammed and come out and talk about it like heroes.

@futurebird How we talk about scams needs to change.

I work for my local power company. I'd seen generic notices to the public about being wary about scammer, but nothing so direct about using the threat of a power shut off to extort $$. Always thought it was people trying to gain access to homes for robberies. Which also happens.

So when I got a call I almost fell for it. We are selling my aunt's property, and realtors have to pick unknown calls. Passed the call to me.

They were soooo skilled at manipulation. I looked passed the first few minor mistakes. It took insider knowledge to raise my guard. Even then I wasn't sure it was a scam until after I hung up and called the legit line. I owed $75, not $900.

Had I known they used power shut off as a lure, I'd have been more wary. They probably used the listing.

Be wary of scams isn't enough. You need to know the basic MO, which can be really creative. Once they have you it is really hard to get their claws off.
