Agree completely. Especially a good move prior to the Olympics. The energy has been insane.
Although, I have a sneaking suspicion this is probably the last event I get to see the US play internationally any time soon. Which, from just a hockey development perspective blows. But I get it.

Game Day Thread ― February 17Welp, Canada had their future in their hands and they handled business. Now it's just a game for pride before finals for the US and Swede's. Shame on the guys who can't suit up today but kudos to the scratches who will get to wear their nation's colors for a game. Can't wait to see if the US can pull it off against big brother. Cheers and grats ya nerds. -
Game Day Thread ― February 17Glad to hear it sounds like he is good for the finals. I love hating on Tkachuk's but it's the same hate I have for guys like Marchand. Hate to play against them, love it when they occasionally find their way on a side I'm rooting for. Would always welcome that type of player on the Kings. -
Game Day Thread ― February 17DD has always seemed to be the kind of guy that still has that 12 year old sense of wonder in him. Like, he grew up a massive Canadian team fan and a Kings fan. Not playing in those sweaters is just something that doesn't compute for him. He flips the switch from hate to love with any new team mates. Has always been amazing in the locker room because of it. -
Game Day Thread ― February 17Not sure how I feel about Matthew Tkachuk not playing. He must be seriously hurt. Guy played the finals with a broken sternum... Shame -
Game Day Thread ― February 17Top notch internationals are always amazing. -
Game Day Thread ― February 17Canada has to win in regulation OR it gives the Swedes a chance to win in regulation to take 2nd. 3 points for a win if it doesn't go to OT. -
Game Day Thread ― February 17That last goal was akin to what we weren't seeing a lot of vs the US, slot shots with rebounds in the crease. -
Game Day Thread ― February 17My industry is such that unless the holiday is Xmas or on that level, we are always working. And even then it's in the emergency response field, so the crews are technically available 24/7/365. Such sigh. -
Game Day Thread ― February 17Honestly don't see how we don't see a CA v US rematch at this point. Fins are in a super deep hole early on. -
Game Day Thread ― February 17Also, sucks I'm stuck at work for this -
Game Day Thread ― February 17Good to see Makar back in the mix. -
US Development ProgramI've heard from avg Canadian folks that some of that extends from A) the sustained cost of the sport in general, and to a lesser extent B) that the recent years of scandals involving the system has taken its toll. Not saying that's why or why not, but it is what I've heard from people over the last handful of years. -
US Development Program"The majority of the roster comes from the program." Obviously that doesn't include the half dozen or so that wasn't brought into that fold, including the goalies. I always find it disingenuous to place a win or a loss on a singular player from either team. I also look at the scoring chances and from my perspective that translates into the offensive game plan of the Canadians. They clearly wanted to set up the crease given the talent they have. I'd argue however they should have shook it up a bit and used more screens in the crease for shots coming off the slots and played for the rebounds. That aspect felt very minimal and a lost opportunity. My issue from the US side was how they took their foot off the gas in that third period and tried to play a more safe approach. Normally I like that concept but not against such a high power / quality opponent. You can't expect Canada to not bite you in the ass in those scenarios. The PK against the Canadians looked pretty solid and I think that was the unsung hero last night. -
US Development Program(This is mostly a community traction post because Lemmy needs more of it.) US dev seems to be paying off on the top level. We have already seen the more recent juniors results the last handful of years but now it is starting to show beyond that. I know the majority of this US roster comes from that program and I feel like last night that was visually apparent. It's starting to feel like a proper Canadian / American hockey rivalry has taken shape which should mean the next decade or so of international events should be top notch from that perspective. On a semi related note; RIP to the Kids' 26 game win streak record wearing the Canadian sweater. Absolutely a legendary stat. His assist last night was crazy greasy. -
Canada vs. USA Game ThreadWelp, that was a fun game. Can't wait to see v 2.0 after the round robin. -
Canada vs. USA Game ThreadThe physical shouldn't surprise. There was zero chance of this game not getting really chippy and bodies flying. However, I did not have 30 penalty minutes in 9 seconds on my bingo card.
