If we want to talk about *first,* then Maze War takes the trophy. Wolfenstein 3D may have come before Doom, but it lacked the influence and staying power. Wolf may have been first, but Doom birthed the genre as we know it

Many other games have "defined" their genres, but few have done so quite as completely as Doom (1993). -

And on top of birthing the entire FPS genre, the practice of making Doom run on any electronic device with a screen and a CPU has long been a fantastic exercise in programming and hacking. The possibility of implementing Doom in everything from calculators to pregnancy tests to Captcha in a browser window has kept the game in the public consciousness for decades, and will continue to do so for decades to come. Of course the real answer is Clash of Clans, because it popularized mobile gaming and skyrocketed that platform's revenue to the point that it outpaces every other gaming platform *combined,* but I'll boycott BAFTA if something riddled with microtransactions gets any recognition -
All y'all acting as if the answer isn't Candy Crush or some other mobile bullcrap.Mobile is the biggest platform by *far*. Mobile games make more money than console and PC *combined.* Can't wait for some console/PC gamer to tell me that playing Bloons TD doesn't make you a gamer, but playing Fortnite somehow does -
Twitch’s new storage limits will purge huge swaths of Internet gaming historyA hot and uneducated take: nothing of value will be lost. Nobody will ever go searching through a defunct twitch account's 142 hours of Minecraft speedrun attempts. If it's valuable, back it up locally -
Obsidian's modest ambition with Avowed is just what Game Pass, Xbox, and the wider industry needs - but will Microsoft let them stick to it?I'm just tired of the genre. I have played Morrowind, and Oblivion, and Skyrim, and Fallout 3, and New Vegas, and Fallout 4, and Fallout 76, and Outer Worlds, and Cyberpunk, and Starfield. I'm good. -
Overwatch 2 is bringing loot boxes back from the deadThe fact that it's not even daily is going to kill any pull this has with me. It needs to be linked to progression level, like it used to be -
Overwatch 2 is bringing loot boxes back from the deadI also liked them. Hopefully the article is wrong about >"Season 15 also features the return of loot boxes," a press release says. "You will be able to earn a variety of cosmetics when collecting loot boxes. They will be available from weekly and event rewards." You'll also be able to earn one loot box via the free battle pass and an additional two in the Premium battle pass. Weekly and event rewards, and *one* free one per season??? That's just insulting
