Think of A as "host" side, B as "device" side.
A (big rectangle) and B (big square w/ rounded corners - the old printer usb) are the oldest.
Then mini-B (tiny flanged rectangle) for old DLSR, digital quick-cameras and early cell phones. mini-A was rare, it was usually just A->mini-B.
Micro-B (teeny trapezoid) for most aughts and '10s mobile devices.
