@futurebird Do ants even have an idea of 'self'? And if they do, do you think they have a theory of mind for other ants? Other insects? People?

Sometimes I like to make a big deal about the relentless (complementary) sisterhood of ant colonies.@futurebird Because, I realized, he may have an idea of self but not really of 'doorway' and certainly none of his relationship to it.

Sometimes I like to make a big deal about the relentless (complementary) sisterhood of ant colonies.@futurebird I was putting the coat and leash on my dog last night, and as is typical, I had to move him a bit to center him in the doorway so I didn't bang my hands on the doorframe as I was putting on his coat. Which, he's trained to come to the door, stand in the same place, dip his head for the coat, etc. he does all this, every time, how come he won't center himself in the doorway?

Today's ant of the day is Solenopsis molesta, the thief ant.@futurebird Wait, you mean you're NOT on speaking terms with at least 17 species of ants??? I just assumed you were the diplomat of all the ants. It IS in your name after all.

Today's ant of the day is Solenopsis molesta, the thief ant.@neckspike @futurebird Bedbugs. I lived in a house with bedbugs once.

Today's ant of the day is Solenopsis molesta, the thief ant.@futurebird This. I tell my son, when he wants to put poison on fruit flies, "You know they use fruit flies to test evolution, right?"

Today's ant of the day is Solenopsis molesta, the thief ant.@futurebird Had to take my puppy to the vet hospital once, because he walked around and licked all the roach baits off the base trim. He was having tremors when I brought him in. Had to get a transfusion and several bags of saline to flush him out.

Today's ant of the day is Solenopsis molesta, the thief ant.@futurebird Remember folks, you can't ever put down enough poison to kill all the insects, but you can easily put down enough to harm yourself and your family!

@Em Honestly the one that got me interested in ants in the first place: that some queens live for up to thirty years- A colony may be very old!@futurebird Social insects are SO WEIRD!!! Are they a single animal, or are they individuals? Both? Neither? Where does the generational divide really happen? Is it between Queen and alete or worker and alete?
If ever I think does my life really have to be like this, all I have to do is look at ants or bees and be like, nope, not at all.

Prototaxites doesn't make any sense.@futurebird If you think about it, fungi are a really nice calling card for evolution "will fill any niche no matter how weird or how little anyone else wants it. Odd shapes and disgusting morphologies a speciality. Call now for rates."
-
Prototaxites doesn't make any sense.@futurebird Because fungi are a weird, long, convoluted way down the evolutionary path, with many dead ends and maybe very few forcing factors like predation to worry about having to maximize the efficiency of the genome?

A humpback whale almost swallowed a kayaker but spit him out.@futurebird Wow, he must have some serious redeeming qualities.
