Kids these days always on the ebike with the disc breaks.

@futurebird This grumpy old man from Vancouver agrees! And I have a bike with eighteen gears (18!) and hydraulic disc breaks & gear shifters! What in blazes‽ WHO NEEDS THAT‽
…well, okay, me apparently…
@IanAMartin @futurebird As a Dutch person, when I went to canada, Canadian friends asked me "what wheel size do you use?", "what frame size?", and more. I just answered "I don't know... it looks like shit, cycles comfortably, and gets me to work and back every day.
I do find it fascinating how north Americans can make an identity out of almost anything...

I know Americans can be uniquely annoying but I kind of think ALL people do this. It's like the defining trait of people in a way.

@futurebird @ainmosni @IanAMartin My colleague and I are always Oh Shimano 1X Apex Di2 Campagnolo tubeless blah blah blah and meanwhile another colleague spent last summer doing the longest climb in Taiwan and then the all Tour de France climbs tour, and when we ask him about his gear he says Oh I got it a couple of years ago. It’s white I think.

@futurebird @IanAMartin oooh this has given me the start of a limerick…
A grumpy old man from Vancouver
Decided he needed to Hoover
The whizz-bang machine
Had its own magazine
But proved dauntingly hard to manoeuvre. -

Kids these days always on the ebike with the disc breaks. In my day we had but ONE gear. And we LIKED it. We felt lucky.
Sometimes if you were going to get really fancy you could install a brake
@futurebird in my day, if we were lucky, we had a rear deck where our friends would stand while holding on to our shoulders. They had both hands free tò hold on because no One had tò hold a cellphone and we didn't need to call our friend because they were already standing on the bick of our bike and were already chatting with us

@futurebird in my day some of us not only had gears, we had stickshifts!

Bronx kids ride three on a citibike to this day, much to the consternation of the local constabulary.

I think it's mostly become nicer without really ever gentrifying since I've been here for the past 18 years or so.
It's still very poor, but there are more people than ever, but it's also very friendly and safe all things considered.
Like most of NYC everyone is very ambitious and always up to something "big"
