    @futurebird @catmisgivings I'm from California and i love hearing people from New York saying things like "dogs" and "coffee" - it makes me chuckle.

          I can't even explain what's going on out there. Here is a sample of what sounds like "a heavy accent" to my ear.

              @flipper @catmisgivings

              I have a spreadsheet of accents that catch my ear for being "natural" but distinctive. Minor obsession.

                That's what people from California think NYC sounds like.

                The worst fake NYC accent is that one that Meowth has. I have never heard ANYONE who sounds like that in my life.

                IDK maybe that's how Pica sounds but she pretends she can't talk around humans.

                Wait... wait... wait...

                Meowth is supposed to have a New York accent????

                Mind. Blown.

                I thought it was just "made up cat accent."

                  @futurebird @catmisgivings The (I think NYC) accent that really surprised me, when I heard him for the first time, was Isaac Asimov. I just hadn't expected him to sound like a cabbie from some film.

                    I like the way both of them say "robits" ... this seems to be going away. But it was common in US English a generation ago.

                      @futurebird @darkling @catmisgivings I have never in my lifetime heard anyone in person (or on live/modern TV) say "robit" but wow they sure said it a lot on a lot of really old TV/movies. I guess Asimov was a product of such times, so he certainly would have heard it that way a lot.

                      I just... I don't understand where that pronunciation even came from. It's literally spelled rob*ot, not robi*it... How do you just suddenly randomly change an 'o' to an 'i' every time despite seeing how it's spelled?

                        I wonder if it was a product of the clipped high diction of "radio voice" where everything was said with a kind of clarity that was meant to overcome static?
