@VoiceofDuum If not for all the hilarious nonsense I hear I’d refuse to teach them.

The way they categorize things is … remarkable.

        they are from LA!

but the kid was like “yeah out west”

The theory is if there is a guitar and it’s “from out west” then it’s “country”

        NYC children concern me sometimes.

As a child of the west who had met no New Yorkers, that particular New Yorker cover amused me when I first saw it.

When I was older and started to meet New Yorkers, my opinion changed.

I've always wanted to do one in reverse, where the "east" basically starts at Denver and Boston, New York, Philly, DC, etc. are all essentially in Europe.

Just say “new york is in new England” this makes people from here irrationally angry and although I’ve lived here most of my life as someone from the midwest I don’t think I’ll ever understand why.

(it is very funny though… be subtle about it eg “New York, Hartford and other new england cities”)

@futurebird They did cover Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", which is *kinda* country-ish.

(Funny story from a Grateful Dead chat on AOL back in the early 90's: Leaving a concert during the encore (Knockin'), someone heard some kids behind him remark, "oh, they're playing a Guns & Roses song!")

@futurebird @geoffduncan @moira I used to hear that City Island (Bronx) was New England by New Yorkers even back in the day when the landfill near the bridge was active and very aromatic. It was probably due to the small town feel and the large number of small boats.

I'm going to put that one in my bag of things to say to New Yorkers. 😉

One of my favorites is NYC people learning I'm from Nevada. "Oh, what was it like to grow up in Vegas?" "Vegas is as close to where I grew up as you are to, say, Rochester."

@futurebird @geoffduncan As someone who lived in Massachusetts for some years, let me assure you New Englanders would be just as angry.

Northeastern upstate New York, _maybe_. MAYBE. If it's in the very northeast. Ithaca, because of Cornell, MAYBE. But it's a... not oblast, what's the word. ENCLAVE. It's an enclave. AT BEST.

And yes, it is funny. xD

@geoffduncan @futurebird From a chat with with some born and bred New Yorkers as in NYC, some years ago:

Them: "How do _you_ pronounce Schenectady?"

Me: "I don't, I usually say Poughkeepsie or Leonardsville and nobody knows the difference."

Them: "EXACTLY. Because all those fucking upstate towns are EXACTLY THE SAME."

@mattmcirvin @futurebird @geoffduncan Oh yeah, basically, anything in or around the Adirondacks mostly counted. At least, to anyone who didn't draw a hard line at the NYS border.

(And certainly did _not_ count to the extremists who excised Hartford and Boston, tho' I can sympathise with anyone who wants to excise Connecticut in general. xD )

When I was in elementary school, I had a pen pal who wrote that he liked guns and roses. I didn't know about the band at the time, so I just thought... those are two weirdly different interests, but ok, let's talk about roses I guess.

@mattmcirvin @futurebird @geoffduncan Oh yeah, basically, anything in or around the Adirondacks mostly counted. At least, to anyone who didn't draw a hard line at the NYS border.

(And certainly did _not_ count to the extremists who excised Hartford and Boston, tho' I can sympathise with anyone who wants to excise Connecticut in general. xD )

@moira @futurebird @geoffduncan Refusing to admit Boston as part of New England does seem pretty extreme!

                                          @moira @geoffduncan

                                          Excuse me what.

If I went for a nice weekend in Saratoga but ended up in Albany I would not be happy.

But the real wild ones will call Yonkers “upstate” — I know people in the Bronx who do this.
