The German antkeepers call trophallaxis (which sounds like a medical procedure) the much cuter "schwesternkuss" and I think we should steal this word into English-speaking antkeeping because it's better.
(I don't know what German scientific articles say, maybe not "sister kissing")
UPDATE: I have been informed that sadly this may just be one weird dude I know who says this and not a cool new trend word in German antkeeping.

Oh god... is she selling her online courses again? I'm so sorry I've been trying to stop her.
My regular reminder that Pica DOES NOT have a "degree in sleeping" and she cannot issue valid diplomas. She does claim to offer "courses" that "teach u 2 sleep better" but there is no evidence that these courses do anything and her LLC isn't an accredited university or college. Under no circumstances should you give her your SS number, credit card number or... really even your age or height. You have been warned.

When cats receive affection or kindness they never ever question or worry if they deserve it. "Of course I do!" and they feel the same about giving affection.
It's a much more healthy way to look at such things and I try to learn from Pica in this one area.
Do people who have no experience with small mammals and cats in particular read cat body language correctly?
Some things are pretty obvious, such as hissing and teeth.
But what about "airplane ears" or a thrashing tail?
Or blinking and looking away? (happy cat)
I wonder how much of this is based off of similar human expressions, if any of it is "hard wired" ... etc.

quaternions did nothing wrong... except maybe failing to magically model fluid dynamics in 3D in the same lovely way that complex numbers work in 2D.
That kind of drives me nuts. We can work out airflows using complex numbers ... but only in a 2D plane.

It's nice to reconnect with old school friends but if Facebook shows me one more titanium minimalist object of dubious utility with a name a like "Frok : titanium cutlery disrupting the common fork" or whatever I may just bounce out of sheer annoyance at the targeted ads.
It's like being trapped in one of those old "future tech" videos from vsauce from the early oughts.
I guess they have me tagged as some kind of "early adopter, huge nerd, will buy any crap" person.

I'm honestly just psyching myself up for if I need to do this kind of thing again. I might.
It's the whole "we're just doing it to go along with what's happening now" ethos that I think might hold the most little victories for us.
So many terrible things happen because of people just going along with a bunch of little bad things that come together into a much more ugly and unstoppable bad thing.
With the sheepish ones just letting them know you won't do it, (that it crosses the bright line) can make them back off some of the time.
This can be very scary and if you are thinking "but I could be fired" I understand that. Ask for help. Talk about it outside of work or with people you trust. Don't go looking for an excuse to comply and not feel bad about it. If you do you should feel bad.
Find a way to NOT do it instead.
I know someone who rebuffed such a request. Boss was apologetic "it's what the higher ups want, oh *I* think it's a lot of nonsense, but I don't want us to be out of step ... blah blah"
It was proposed to them in sheepish way. They said it would be a lot of work, not add anything of value, and most important they would not do it. It didn't come up again.
Fascism can be the work of zealots, but there are also many sheepish middle management helping hands who "don't even believe in this really"
Do not help them to build any more of this machine.
Depending on your job you probably have in the past made compromises. Maybe to keep your job. Maybe to survive. This is a bright line. If you are asked to be the one to update the table don't let it be your fingers typing those changes.
If you can't just say "No I won't do that." Stall, run away, feign incompetence. Just don't let it happen.
I suspect this might be where the rubber hits the road first for us around here.
Nothing has changed. You do not have to do it. It is not even ordained.
If you work with a database and are asked to alter the table structure to comply in advance for citizenship or gender categorizations it's really important to NOT do it.
"The governor is concerned about all this stuff they want us to update our record keeping so we store both gender AND biological sex."
"We need fields to store the country of origin of people's parents."
If you don't have the power to rebuff this yourself, ask for help. At minimum ask for help online anonymously.
