It has always seemed clear to me that the whole point of this cosmic journey is to move around, find interesting people, and write things you hope others want to read, so I've never really cared all that much about the tenure/salary/pension side of higher ed. And yet at the same time I can't get these deafening warning bells out of my ears: you made a poor choice, you should leave, this just isn't worth it...

Masochistic insanityBy law (2023 National Defense Authorization Act), this can only be *legally* done with an impossibly high 2/3 majority in the Senate or separate legislation. In practice, I think all know by now that the current admin wouldn't come to the aid of an ally facing invasion, so it's on its deathbed anyway.
I wouldn't bet a Canadian nickel on rump NATO pulling together, but on the plus side these countries will no longer be expected to support the US in foolish Asian adventures.

I am just going to load up Civilization VII now.My first reaction on Friday was sensory overload unlike any of its predecessors, but there's always an acclimation period for new releases in the series.
The unit movement animations are waaaayyyy too slow and the settlement limit is enraging, but the diplo is considerably more sophisticated and the game itself is beautiful looking.
Historians should be allowed to play during work hours, IMO. Happy city razing!

Things look very different here in the boondocks relative to LEX/LOU. They still hadn't restored streetlights or started work on city hall the last time I drove through Mayfield, three years after the 2021 tornado... Our taxes are too low to cover some of the basic infrastructure to preserve human life.

The state cannot handle snow removal on a good day and we're about to get blasted with another huge winter storm on Tues/Weds before flood waters have receded. We absolutely cannot handle disaster relief without #FEMA and there will be so much unnecessary human suffering here once the agency is shuttered.
