Can you help me brainstorm some thorny "AI Ethics Puzzles"

These are little scenarios meant to act as a starting point in discussions about the ethics of AI.

I will post some examples in response to this post, but I'd love to find some even more thorny ones.

Ideally a puzzle shouldn't have a totally obvious solution when presented to people with a wide range of views. Make up something, or share what you have encountered.

I get into this a bit more in this part of the thread:

    myrmepropagandist (@futurebird@sauropods.win)

As a teacher who is always looking out for kids who struggle with "socializing" the part about being shut out really bothers me. When I was in HS internet was a secret world for a few dozen nerdy kids who knew about it. Now it's more like the socially savvy kids figure it out, and even manage to use it rather responsibly, but the kids who are more like I was... they have no idea what's going on or where to start and they are just left out. That sucks.

Are you saying it's better not to have such a network?

You are very incorrect about my experience with bullying.

However, in the wild, there are more variables. Ant colony wars are less inevitable. In urban and suburban environments most of the conspicuous ant wars you see are between ants of the same species, often sister colonies founded at the same time. These ants are Tetramorium sp., the pavement ant, when these ants live under suburban sidewalks the summer nearly always ends in war.

In the antkeeping hobby many people have wanted to keep multiple colonies of ants in the same enclosure to see how they interact. The trouble is you need a *very* large enclosure for this to end in any way other than one colony wipin the other out.

Ants are very adept at assessing if they can completely eliminate another colony: in a controlled environment, usually one colony will have an advantage and that is the colony that will survive.

@neckspike @Landa She was so belligerent!

This spring and summer I want to focus more of my observations on how wild colonies interact with each other. They can’t possibly be this belligerent all of the time.

I think the artificial environment may make it harder for colonies to find a truce— which they often do in the wild.

She could sense the this colony from *across the room* Honed in on a tiny hole in the tubing (that’s what she’s worrying at, it’s a hole I use to add water. )

I think she wanted to fight them all.

My ants travel in clear plastic tubes. Sometimes I've seen what happens when an ant who is from another colony is on the outside of the tube. They will track her visually.

However, ants are so sensitive to pheremones I think this experiment would be tricky to set up. Not impossible but consider how this ant found a pinhole in one of these tubes.

And, using the field trip example again, there *are* legal implications to taking students on a trip. That's why we have permission slips.

Legal reasons are surmountable if you are doing something reasonable.

Don't abandon your idea before you even try it because thinking about the "legal implications" is complex.

In the case of having a student intranet I think there are basically ZERO legal implications since everything the network would do already exists in a school.

    * It's something you pick up if you work in a big organization. Even the most innocent seeming ideas can be shot down for "legal reasons" --I think it can be very counterproductive to internalize this notion if you aren't a lawyer. Let the lawyers raise the "legal reasons" ... we don't live in some kind of paralyzed time when nothing can be done.

If "field trips" didn't exist I'm certian the first person to propose them would hear "can't go on a trip for legal reasons"

I want to thank some of you for your comments on this post that have made me realize a few things:

    1. When talking about "social media intranets for teens" I need to make it clear I'm NOT talking about anonymous networks. Just like with school email it's one account per person.
    2. I should probably define the difference between internet and intranet as well.
    3. I'm going to hear "can't do it legal reasons*" over and over and should be ready with the big guns for THAT one.

Are Humans Self-Aware? Ants have often tested humans for self awareness. They placed objects in our homes and were shocked we didn't cover them in sand. "Although humans build interesting nests & show signs of cooperation, can they really have rich inner lives like ants? Unlikely." They laid pheromone trails & we ignored them. "Even a newly eclosed callow or a termite could have followed these trails! Human intelligence is perhaps similar to that of a lichen... or perhaps an aphid at best."
