@kelson @PizzaDemon The thing about school shootings is the public receptiveness to "sensible gun legislation" has changed in the US. There has been an impact and a shift. Republicans are simply in the grip of a powerful lobby. And sometimes a powerful lobby can be a powerful weakness.

@alter_kaker I think some media miss the cycle of "liberals are mad about this silly thing" and they are trying to recreate it. To some degree it's funny to do such stories about conservatives but it's also just an annoying way to frame politics. It's boring. It's possible to talk about small issues about design and advertising without becoming ... crazy. These things do matter. Not as much as other issues, but part of the framing feels like "how dare you analyze anything!"

@josh0 @cwebber @Binder I do think there are some tropical species that could make good pets from what I've learned about them from keepers in their home countries. But, more research is needed about which ants would make sense. (With ants the risk of invasives coming from pets is rather low, but the other impacts aren't good.)

@14_14 "Human Intelligence" is what LLMs "AI" are trying to simulate and replace. Because people have a need for it. Reddit, Twitter, and long ago the usenet could do this kind of thing. But, I would never trust an LLM with a question like this one. I'm concerned that since corporate social media is broken many people are turning to LLMs.It would be very easy to push propaganda and steer public opinion through an LLM, and that is what people like Musk say they want to do.

@statsguy xerces is also for invertebrates so clam fans can take note of that. Naturally I think that every country should have something like an "Office of Ants" but, this is just work for the future.

@ClimateJenny There are two books:the ants of New EnglandThis is the best field guide on US and Canada ants, although it's about "new England" many of your local ants will be in this book. "Ants of North America" is a more general guide, not as much detail, but still high quality.

@rk I don't think we have any "problem students" but there are students who I'd rather not deal with together because they are either too good friends and annoying or they don't like each other and they are annoying or... if you can imagine it... BOTH.
