The only way I can understand it is it is meant to replace the act of human service. Like someone bringing you food, or a nurse checking on you... but, and perhaps only a wealthy person could have done this, the whole point of such roles is that it's a person helping you. Which is why people recover faster if a nurse talks to them for a few mins.

Then there are the extraordinary circumstances, where having a real person is a matter of safety.

I have design questions about this. Philosophical ones.

Think of a blender, a roomba, an automated forklift, these are machines that automate things people do, but they don't look like the human form.

Even the robotic arms in car factories aren't exactly like human arms.

Meanwhile this prototypes has... suggestions of biceps. Suggestions of a face. WHY?

What is this robot for exactly?

And why can't they make a robot that will fold laundry yet?

I mean this is why we want to do all of that education about consent. To inoculate young people against this kind of tactic.

One of the victims mentioned that one of the ways Maxwell would control them was by threatening to tell their parents what they were doing.

And being a kid this child thought "I don't want to get in trouble" and kept the secret.

That's what we are dealing with.

Imagine being a grown gnarled man who owns fancy homes and cars and never worries about money and looking at the blinking sparking gifs on a child's old mySpace page. Looking at a photo where she has a red solo cup in her hand and she's having fun and thinking "got her! this will ruin her."

I mean... he probably had legal staff to do that but still. Dude was "but what was she WEARING?" children.

This is an ant-centric space and you know that, Michael.

(jk I'm curious about the other instances of hybridogenesis, because it would complicate any theory that links it to eusociality in particular. Although I suspect such links have to exist.)

I don't like the way this is being broken up, but having 100s of workers all from one country isolated in a foreign country like this... it just reeks of labor exploitation.

And the Americans who live nearby and see it going might resent it, and that's who's picked our president I suppose.

Was this about just putting a factory on US soil for legal reasons but not really trying to get the proper paperwork for the workers?

    It's a bit odd.

    And I suspect extortion

Have you seen the new tesla robot? It is a very sad video. The robot is terrible... but they are so excited to replace people they posted it as an accomplishment.

I've been worried that the DOJ will lie and say that the tapes, phone logs all of the evidence "got lost" or they never had it or Biden's dog ate it or whatever ... but these interviews with the young victims exist. Many people know they exist and they can't be wished away.

They should be released, along with everything else of course.

And probably if they ever are the next question will be "why haven't the people mentioned in this been charged yet?"

Alan Dershowitz came down from Boston and combed through these teens mySpace pages and talked to their friends. Dershowitz was looking for photos of the children partying or doing anything to make them seem like imperfect victims. He was gearing up to smear these teens to protect Epstein. Make them out to be prostitutes, or "loose" -- this never happened because the charges were magically dropped.

Think about that, their *mySpace* pages.

One of the things we *know* the DOJ has in the Epstein files are interviews with the children he victimized in Florida.

Interviews taken with girls as young as 14. (It's different when you see the victims as adults talking about something that happened years ago. I can understand why "some people" might want to keep those interviews hidden.)

Here is an interview with their lawyer. It's a bit graphic. But whose fault is that?

Also, this paper has caused me to wonder if there are some further or unique benefits to hybridization for eusocial animals: mainly that this strategy can also help ensure that it's only the queen whose eggs can continue the lineage. I wonder what happens to the hybrid workers eggs if they ever lay any. It seem to create a more extreme distinction between the reproductive and worker castes. But, I need to keep reading.

    @dhobern @stuartyeates @llewelly @Quantensalat

That makes sense. I'm still confused about what a "caste-biasing genotype" is. I assume caste here means the reproductive caste of queen. So, if they became ants that just used queen producing parthenogenesis and there were no males that would be a "cast-biased genotype" which reduces species adaptability and all of the other benefits of sexual reproduction?

This paper does the same thing many math papers (and talks) do. They start out obviously trying to write for the more general audience. Explaining all of the basic concepts as they come up. But, when they get into the exciting bit they become giddy and stop breaking everything down with as much care.

It's that meme where a student is in a math class and the board says "1+1=2" then she looks away for one second and looks back and it's full of calculus.

They are talking about the evolutionary benefits of Social Hybridogenesis. What's going on with these ants goes beyond Social Hybridogenesis.

Stuart, Llewelly can you you help me understand this bit from the paper?

"This strategy may have been selected either to benefit from potential worker hybrid vigour or to prevent queen-only production due to the fixation of a caste-biasing genotype"

It's in the section about "Maintenance of a clonal lineage of males"

I understand the hybrid vigor bit, but what do they mean by "fixation of a caste-biasing genotype" ?
