  • Sometimes I wish I could start a wildcat opinion polling operation because existing (public) polling tends to avoid open-ended polls, it rarely asks interesting questions.

But really I'm curious about what is going on in people's head and how that intersects with how limited resources are distributed.

After 9/11 NYPD adopted a "data driven" system to decide how their "visibility" would be deployed.

Relative fluctuations in reported crimes result in officers being sent to the general area to stand around. This would make sense if crime were a miasma like a viscus gas... but ... why not investigate the reports?

"visibly" is a major "crime prevention" tactic of the NYPD. It's not even totally disconnected from evidence... but there are a lot of unsolved cases in NYC. Should they be investigating those cases? Responding to the people who have experienced an accrual crime and trying to solve it?

There is a beauty supply shop where the owner is annoyed by petty theft. He has video of the theft but the NYPD has not watched it.

More pressing there are unsolved violent crimes

Some of the few numbers I can find point to something even stranger. A group of people who simultaneously think that "crime is worse than ever" now but also that "crime was worse in the 80s"

    HOW.

These polls are having a big impact on public policy and MY life. Specifically, for example that there were 12 NYPD at my subway station yesterday. When I asked them why they were there (which I always do, very politely) they said "for visibility"

This is coming up because I'm trying to understand the American obsession with "crime"

Crime, all across the country was worse in the 70s and 80s in nearly any way you might want to quantify it. Number of murders, number of reported crimes, public disorder etc. It's a very broad and obvious trend.

A large portion of the US population nonetheless think that crime has gotten WORSE not better in this period.

How large of a portion? Why?

This is harder to find out.

Political commentators often talk confidently about what "the American public" thinks about one thing or another sprinkling their theories with occasional polls (in the better cases) or just making stuff up based on vibes just as often.

This is because opinion articles on what people think, can shape what people think and can shape the "messaging" if not the policy of politicians.

Those sincerely curious about what the public think are rare.

In this case it is very obvious from the questions they ask and the example attack paragraphs they show.

If you have taken this poll you'd know.

This is that "finger in the wind" and tell them what they want brand of politics.

They are going to start talking about crime (even more, helping Republicans) they might bring up the entrance exams for the specialized high schools (Why do we have so few of these excellent schools that so many kids get turned away. Tax 'em good and build two more Bronx Sciences )

With what Cuomo is spending I hope they are doing interviews ... much more reliable.

But that would be work... and these are the same political consultants who have kept Democrats loosing despite raising tons of cash.

If like 80 people do this kind of thing it can really mess up the poll. These firms skimp.

And the consistent persona is important since if they are even trying they will tie multiple polls together to get "a picture of how voters are evolving on issues"

So I keep things like my race and religion the same, but just make chaos in the issues section.

I think it's perfectly safe to take this poll and encourage you to take it and fill it with nonsense.

I always say I'm a "moderate" my top issue is "Corrupt Lawyers" I say I'm "undecided" in everything, but pick the weakest sounding messages to find "very convincing"

It's better if you have a "persona" and answer the polls similarly

So glad this made it to nature... I think I saw this last year and I was blown away by this whole "arrangement"

Correction: This is another, somewhat similar example of ants having unusual reproductive strategies.

Attached: 3 images This is absolutely wild. Two populations of ants (Cataglyphis hispanica) in the deserts of Spain, the same species but separate genetic lineages. All workers are hybrids of both populations but in both cases, through social hybridogenesis the reproductive queens and males are only of one lineage or the other. Queens of both species must mate out to produce workers (hybrids) but the workers never in turn reproduce. They show it's been like this for a long long time! https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2013.2396

    myrmepropagandistF myrmepropagandist

    @Heliograph

I was looking through some old posts and remembered that YES "shell ants" do exist. Here is a post about them:

    myrmepropagandist (@futurebird@sauropods.win)

Probolomyrmex longinodus are a species of ant that nests in snail shells filled with soil. The entire genus is cryptic. Alex Wild has one of the few photos of a living ant: https://www.alexanderwild.com/Ants/Taxonomic-List-of-Ant-Genera/Probolomyrmex/i-LLNndCn/A They are eyeless, and live in leaf litter, or in the previously mentioned shells. Hard to study, hard to find, tricky to ID when you do find them. Absolute legends. Ants with secrets. #ants #rareAnt

This was very entertaining if it was staged? wow what a great example of reality show scripting. Best episode ever.

Keep tearing each other up and I might keep watching. But if they do a big make up? I'm out. Gross.
